What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value calculated by dividing your weight (in kilograms) by your height (in meters squared). It is a widely accepted method to categorize weight in relation to height and provides an easy way to screen for potential health risks. While BMI is not a diagnostic tool, it gives a good indication of whether your weight falls into a healthy range.
Formula: 𝐵 𝑀 𝐼 = 𝑊 𝑒 𝑖 𝑔 ℎ 𝑡 ( 𝑘 𝑔 ) 𝐻 𝑒 𝑖 𝑔 ℎ 𝑡 ( 𝑚 2 ) BMI= Height(m 2 ) Weight(kg) For example, if you weigh 70 kg and your height is 1.75 m: BMI = 70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9 (Normal range).
Formula: 𝐵 𝑀 𝐼 = 𝑊 𝑒 𝑖 𝑔 ℎ 𝑡 ( 𝑘 𝑔 ) 𝐻 𝑒 𝑖 𝑔 ℎ 𝑡 ( 𝑚 2 ) BMI= Height(m 2 ) Weight(kg) For example, if you weigh 70 kg and your height is 1.75 m: BMI = 70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 22.9 (Normal range).
BMI Categories
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), BMI ranges are classified as follows:
Underweight: Less than 18.5
Normal weight: 18.5 – 24.9
Overweight: 25 – 29.9
Obese (Class I): 30 – 34.9
Obese (Class II): 35 – 39.9
Obese (Class III): 40 and above
These categories help you understand your risk of developing lifestyle-related conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.

Limitations of BMI
Although BMI is widely used, it has some limitations:
It does not distinguish between fat and muscle mass.
Athletes with high muscle mass may fall into the “overweight” category despite being healthy.
It does not directly measure body fat distribution.
For a complete health assessment, BMI should be used alongside other measurements like waist circumference, body fat percentage, and overall lifestyle.
